Celebrating 1,100 Years of Kokinshu and 800 Years of Shinkokinshu

This year marks 1,100 years since the compilation of the imperial poem anthology Kokinshu (Collection of Ancient and Modern Japanese Poems) in 905 and 800 years since the completion of Shinkokinshu (New Collection of Ancient and Modern Japanese Poems). In commemorating these two major events in the history of waka (Japanese poetry), the Kyoto National Museum presents an exhibition on art inspired by themes from waka.
Kokinshu-divided primarily into themes based on seasonal motifs and known for its graceful, subtle style-represents a cultural "Japanization" that took place during the first half of the Heian period (794-1185) with the move of the capital from Nara to Kyoto, largely influenced by the development of the phonetic syllabary, kana. Shinkokinshu-compiled by illustrious poets such as Fujiwara no Sadaie (1162-1241) by the order of Emperor Gotoba (1180-1239; r. 1183-1198)-epitomizes the culmination of symbolic, literary language, and new waka style of the late Heian period. This exhibit features exquisite poem collections that embody the beauty of kana, kasen-e (paintings of poetic sages) that pictorially capture early renowned poets, as well as paintings and works of applied art with waka motifs.
