CELEBRATING THE RESTORATION OF THE NATIONAL TREASURE
KYOGYOSHINSHO BY SHINRAN

November 2 (Tuesday) to 28 (Sunday), 2004

The Collections Hall, Gallery 10

This exhibition commemorates the completion of a two-year restoration project (during the fiscal years 2002 to 2003) of the National Treasure Kyogyoshinsho (from the collection of the Shinshu otani Sect). Ken Jodo Shinjitsu Kyogyoshinsho Monrui, commonly known as Kyogyoshinsho (Teaching, Practice, Faith, and Enlightenment), is a compilation of passages from sutras, discourses, and treatises with commentaries by the founder of Shin (True) sect of Jodo (Pure Land) Buddhism, Shinran (1173-1262), and consists of six chapters on the True Teaching and Practice, the True Faith, the True Realization, the True Buddha and Land, and the Transformed Buddha-Bodies and Land. Shinran left many writings from around the time of age sixty; thereafter, until his later years, he spent many years editing his writings and refining and deepening his understanding of the Buddhist teachings. The recent restoration treatment that this set of manuscripts underwent includes removing and strengthening the fissures. Each of the six booklets was first disassembled and the fissures were filled in with paper. The booklets were all given new covers and restored to what is thought to be their original appearance with three-hold bindings. The initial damage was due to the hardening of the paper from the smoke of the fires during the Great Kanto Earthquake. This restoration project became an opportunity to take detailed surveys of these manuscripts and make new discoveries through these findings.
