Although screen (byobu) and sliding door panel (fusuma) paintings were created previous in the Momoyama to Edo periods (second half of the 16th century to the first half of the 19th century), this age witnessed the height of their production in Kyoto. Many schools competed against each other to create magnificent and ostentatious, simple and elegant, and unconventional and innovative works based on diverse subject matters.
