The increasing prominence of Zen Buddhism in the 13th century lead to the profusion of Zen paintings. Previously Buddhist paintings were primarily for ceremonial use. With the rise of Zen, images of Buddhas and portraits of Zen patriarchs as well as ink paintings of landscapes and flowers and birds became prevalent.
