This stone image of the Buddha Dainichi (Skt., Mahavairocana) originally belonged to the temple Kyogan-ji, also known as Kodo, in Kyoto. His hand gesture here with both palms facing up, the left palm resting on the right in front of the abdomen, known as the Meditation Mudra of the Dharma Realm (J., hokkaijo, Skt., dharma-dhatu samadhi-mudra), represents that the sculpture is Dainichi of the Womb World (J., Taizokai, Skt., Garbha dhatu). The smooth, gentle lines of this stone image suggest that it was carved in the late Heian period (794-1185).
