Masterworks from Major Kyoto Temples
August 11, 2015 - September 13, 2015

The Daizō-e exhibition was first held in 1915 and celebrates its centennial anniversary this year. This groundbreaking exhibition, organized by the educational facilities of each of the Buddhist sects based in Kyoto, brought together a cross-denominational selection of manuscripts and other artworks. For scholars, this annual exhibition provided an unprecedented opportunity to view Buddhist treasures preserved in inaccessible temples, inspiring much new research.
After the Meiji Restoration (1867), many Buddhist sects in Kyoto established schools in order to train young people for the new age. This exhibition features outstanding Buddhist paintings from the mother temples that oversaw these schools, in recognition of their contributions to the development of Kyoto in the modern era.
