Emaki Artists
Artists, who produced early Japanese paintings on Buddhist and official court themes, were considered artisans. From the medieval period on, individual artists whose names can be identified began to appear. However, with the exception of a few, most painters rarely expressed themselves individually. Here, the named artists who painted emaki from the medieval to early modern periods will be examined, along with their works.
