Classical Heian Masterpieces

The emaki, which originated as a genre in the latter half of the Heian period (794-1185), reached a zenith in the 12th century. The Tale of Genji, Legends of the Temple on Mount Shigi (Shigisan engi), and the Scroll of Frolicking Animals (Choju giga) represent masterworks from this age. Each of these handscrolls has distinctive styles and expressive techniques, which greatly influenced later works. Featured here are three of the most classic and renowned handscrolls.
