Gifts of Meissen and Berlin Porcelain from a German Count
The German count Fritz von Hochberg (1868-1921) of Niederschlesien (Lower Silesia) traveled through Asia and Oceania for nearly a year beginning in 1907. At the end of his trip, he visited Japan for two months and fell in love with the country. After returning to Germany, he presented a selection of renowned German decorative art, such as Meissen and Berlin ware, to the Imperial Museum of Kyoto (present-day Kyoto National Museum). Even after a hundred years, this generous gift of over forty works conveys the generosity of this German aristocrat who visited Japan.
