Auspicious Motifs in Japanese Textiles
December 15, 2015 - January 31, 2016

In early Japan, the most prized patterns for clothing were those with auspicious associations. Textiles with such designs enveloped their wearers with prayers for long life, prosperity, fertility, and other fundamental human desires and needs. Some auspicious patterns used in Japan originated in ancient China, while others developed out of Japanese customs and legends. This exhibition, organized to correspond with the New Year, features garments bearing celebratory design motifs deriving from both cultures.
