Celebrated Paintings of the Early Kano School - August 14, 2019 - September 16, 2019
The Kano school, one of the best-known names in Japanese painting, has a four-hundred-year history. It was founded as one of Japan's earliest professional painting houses by Kano Masanobu (1434–1530) who was a painter-in-attendance to the Muromachi shoguns. However, it was his son Kano Motonobu (1477–1559), the second-generation head, who fully developed the Kano school’s organization and its stylistic purview, allowing its artists to serve for centuries thereafter as the official painters to the shogunate. This gallery features masterworks by the two progenitors of this prestigious painting school, exemplifying the characteristic concise yet vigorous Kano brushwork.
