- Famous Battles and Valiant Warriors
- June 13, 2017 - July 23, 2017
The late Heian period (794–1185) saw the emergence of a class of warriors who served as military muscle for the nobility and who came to play a leading role in subsequent eras of Japanese history. They became the protagonists in dramas of conquest and battle to the death, and their names were remembered by posterity, sometimes in the glory of victory, sometimes in the misery of defeat. Historical handscrolls depict stories about these warriors that convey the euphoria of combat and the transitory nature of life. In this exhibition, we are pleased to present Mounted Warrior, the famous rendering of a medieval samurai, together with illustrated handscrolls from various eras depicting men who bravely faced death in battle.
