Feature Exhibition in Celebration of ICOM Kyoto 2019
Masterworks of the Kyoto National Museum: Temple and Shrine Treasures
Masterpieces of Song and Yuan Painting from Japanese Temples
August 14, 2019 - September 16, 2019

The Feature Exhibition Room is currently being used to display Chinese Paintings.

Centuries ago, numerous Chinese paintings were brought to temples in the ancient capital of Kyoto, where they served as icons of worship and the object of rituals. The Chinese masterworks preserved as heirlooms in Japan's temples also served as models for Japanese artists. Imported paintings have long been regarded by their owners as precious treasures, even before such works received the modern designations of National Treasure or Important Cultural Property. This gallery features some of the most renowned Chinese paintings in Japan, with a focus on masterworks from the Song (960–1279) and Yuan (1271–1368) dynasties.
