Introduction to Buddhist Sculpture
April 11, 2017 - May 21, 2017

Buddhist sculpture has had a sustaining popularity in modern Japan. Actors, manga artists, and other celebrities have written books on the subject; magazines and newspapers have done features; and bookstores around the country are filled with a variety of introductory guides to these images. The Kyoto National Museum has always displayed a rich variety of Buddhist sculptures in its galleries, but over the years visitors have expressed interest in receiving more elementary, accessible information on Buddhist statuary. This exhibition attempts to respond to such requests by providing specifics about two themes in this field: types of Buddhist statues and materials from which they are made. We hope this exhibition will provide an entryway into the fascinating world of these sacred three-dimensional images.
