Calligraphy by Zen Priests
January 2, 2015 - February 1, 2015

Calligraphy by Zen priests includes a variety of types of writings, among them certificates of enlightenment, instructional literature, and death poems. These artworks are essential for understanding Zen history and thought in China and Japan. As artworks, they differ from the refined, delicate brushwork admired by early calligraphers, and instead feature a distinctive weightiness and sharpness of line. Even if you cannot read what is written, we hope you will feel the spontaneity and strength expressed through these characters.
