Diary and record are words that we use regularly today, but neither is easy to define. Examples of these categories might encompass anything from a personal journal of daily happenings to an institutional history. This exhibition features well-known diaries and records dating from the Heian (794–1185) through the Edo (1615–1868) periods. The varied examples on view give us insights into the people who wrote them and the historical periods in which they lived.
