Dyeing and Weaving Techniques: Katazome Stencil Dyeing
February 4, 2020 - February 26, 2020

Katazome is a traditional technique for dyeing fabrics which employs stencils made from wood or paper to create a design. In this, either the stencil is used like a stamp to which pigments are applied, or, a dye-resist wax or rice paste is pushed through the stencil onto the fabric to create a pattern. Both ways allow to repeat a certain design precisely the same way making the technique suitable for mass production. This section introduces the diversity of katazome textiles which have been favored by people from all social strata.
