Auspicious Textile Patterns
January 2, 2015 - February 8, 2015

From ancient times, people have tried to maximize their good fortune by clothing themselves in auspicious textiles. The designs used on clothing and on other daily furnishings and accessories often invoked wealth, plentitude, fecundity, longevity or other human aspirations. Most auspicious patterns used in Japan are derived either from Chinese iconography or from Japanese customs. This exhibition features examples of textiles with both kinds in the hopes that this New Year will be one of happiness and good luck for all.
