- Shibori: The Art of Tie-Dyeing

Shibori is a term used to describe a variety of tie-resist dyeing techniques. Shibori can be done by binding thread tightly around small sections of cloth or by stitching and binding off sections before placing the cloth in a dye vat. The bound or stitched areas resist the dye, creating patterns that contrast with the colored areas. This simple technique is found in cultures all over the world; it has been used in Japan since ancient times. Japanese tie-dyeing reached its height of sophistication in the Muromachi and Momoyama periods, before surface dyeing technology had been developed. During these periods, tie-resist techniques were used to dye large sections of cloth into complex, multicolored, and sometimes representational patterns. This exhibition looks at the historical progression and variations in shibori techniques.
