- Exquisite Buddhist Implements

This exhibition features a broad representation of the kind of decorative and functional objects used in Japanese Buddhism. They include votive decorations for ornamenting Buddhist sculptures and temple halls, ceremonial offering utensils, objects used by Buddhist priests, bells and gongs for Buddhist rituals, and other implements. All of these are made of metal. Metal objects can be made from various alloys, which can be shaped and decorated using a range of techniques. They are hard, durable, and long-lasting, and they can produce beautiful ringing tones. Most importantly, the shine and brilliance of metal objects makes them particularly appropriate for glorifying the Buddha. This exhibition includes some of the most exquisite and important surviving Buddhist implements in Japan, produced with an assortment of metalwork techniques.
