Large Scale Portraiture from Early Kyoto Temples
August 14, 2019 - September 16, 2019

The Illustrated Handscrolls gallery is currently being used to display Portraiture.

Many of Kyoto's oldest temples preserve portraits of important figures who have contributed either to their founding or to their historical development. This section introduces portraits that are life-sized or larger, dating back as far as Japan's early medieval period (late 12th through 14th century). Previously these works would have adorned spacious temple halls, serving as objects of veneration to honor luminaries of the past. In this sense, they embody the devotion to tradition maintained by generations of predecessors in each temple.
