- Handscrolls in the Kano School Style

The Kano school of painters is known for creating its own innovative painting style by synthesizing Chinese-influenced monochrome ink paintings, often with Chinese painting themes, together with traditional Japanese style painting (yamato-e), featuring deep colors and brilliant gold. It was because of their facility with both traditions that Kano painters engaged in the production of illustrated handscrolls, which generally fell into the category of yamato-e. The first Kano master Masanobu is not known to have painted any such works, but his successor Kano Motonobu (1476–1559) is credited with the Legends of the Shakadō Hall shown this exhibition. Exemplifying the new style pioneered by Motonobu are also Edo period works such as Arguments on the Merits of Sake and Rice and Life of Toyotomi Hidetsugu.
