Celebrated Works of Art from Chion-in Temple:
The Illustrated Biography of the Priest Hōnen Handscrolls (National Treasure)
February 18, 2020 - February 26, 2020

Chion-in Temple in Kyoto's Higashiyama area is the headquarters of the Buddhist Pure Land (Jōdo) sect. The Main Hall (mieidō, National Treasure) at its center was commissioned by the third Tokugawa shogun Iemitsu (1604–1651) in 1639. In 2011, the hall was partly disassembled for renovations to be completed in March this year. This exhibition, held in honor of the successful reopening, features rarely displayed sections of Chion-in's masterwork handscrolls, The Illustrated Life of the Priest Hōnen. The 48 scrolls making up this set date to the early 14th century and have been designated a National Treasure.
