Animals in Medieval Ink Painting
July 2, 2019 - August 12, 2019

A variety of different types of animals fill the ink paintings of medieval Japan. In addition to familiar beasts such as oxen and horses, painters also produced images of tigers, leopards, civits ("musk cats"), and other exotic creatures from far off lands that at the time had never before been seen in Japan. Needless to say, these animals do not appear as one might encounter them in a zoo: their distinctive forms, which are sometimes strange and even humorous, give special interest to the paintings in this exhibition. Meanwhile, dragons and other imaginary animals transport their viewers to fantastical worlds.
