Colorful Birds and Flowers
January 23, 2018 - February 18, 2018

The theme of birds and flowers is a standard subject for East Asian paintings. These are often executed in either monochrome ink or multicolored pigments. Among them, it is the works done in color that most brilliantly portray the natural world. Bird and flower paintings depict myriad varieties of plants blossoming in lavish abundance amidst an assortment of frolicking avian creatures, from songbirds to waterfowl to cranes and other larger birds. This exhibition features masterworks from the Muromachi period (1392 –1573) that almost appear to be competing with one another for the title of “most exquisite.”
