Elegant Pursuits of the Chinese Literati
November 18, 2014 - December 23, 2014

The literati of ancient China believed it was important to engage in academic studies and elegant pursuits even while living amid a vulgar and corrupt world. This exhibition features works by Japanese artists detailing the lives of such high-minded Chinese scholars. Some paintings depict the Four Accomplishments: playing the zither, playing the game of go, doing calligraphy, and painting. Others show legendary episodes of famous figures or depictions of historical poets such as Du Fu (712–770) and Su Dongpo (1037–1101). In each of these paintings can be felt a deep reverence for and idolization of the lives of literati in ancient China.
