Animals in Medieval Ink Painting
June 14, 2016 - July 18, 2016

A variety of different types of animals appear in the ink paintings of medieval Japan. In addition to familiar beasts such as oxen and horses, painters also produced images of elephant, leopards, civits ("musk cats"), and other exotic creatures never seen by Japanese eyes. Also found are imaginary animals such as dragons, which transport their viewers into imaginary worlds. These animals are not always portrayed as you would see them in a zoo, but their distinctive, sometimes strange or humorous forms give special interest to the paintings in this exhibition.
