- The 220th Death Anniversary of Nagasawa Rosetsu

Nagasawa Rosetsu (1754–1799) enjoyed great renown in his own lifetime. As of this year, two hundred years have passed since Rosetsu died in Osaka, far from home. Born to a low-ranking samurai family, he went to Kyoto to become a painter, training under Maruyama Ōkyo (1733–1795). While Maruyama Ōkyo had a great many acolytes, Rosetsu would become by far his most prominent disciple. Rather than endlessly returning to the styles of his teacher, Rosetsu constructed unique worlds of his own—whether through unrestrained ink painting or in precise works of color. This commemorative exhibition invites one to enter these alluring worlds of Rosetsu's creation.
