Masterworks of the Kyoto National Museum: Temple and Shrine Treasures
Sliding Door Paintings from Kyoto Temples - August 14, 2019 - September 16, 2019
The development of advanced digital imaging technology in recent years has led more and more temples to display reproductions in their halls, entrusting their original sliding door, wall, and screen paintings to the museum for safekeeping. This allows visitors to enjoy the originals within a museum environment, while still experiencing the images in their intended architectural spaces through the use of high-resolution facsimiles. The aim of such projects is to safeguard cultural assets and ensure they are passed on to future generations. A side benefit of housing originals in the museum is that it allows large-scale interior paintings from several different temples to be viewed in a single venue.
