- Momoyama and Edo Period Wall and Door Paintings

The interiors of temples, castles, and other grand buildings in early modern Japan were often custom decorated with expansive painted scenes on their sliding door panels, alcove walls, ceilings, or other spaces. Created as part of the comprehensive design scheme of a building, the styles of such paintings changed over time along with developments in architectural modes. During the Momoyama and Edo periods, especially, master artists competed to outdo one another on such commissions, resulting in numerous large scale wall and door paintings. These artworks went beyond simple interior decoration, functioning as important visual symbols of the power and authority of their owners. This exhibition features a lavish assemblage of masterworks from the golden age of large-scale interior paintings.
