Eighteenth Century Wall and Door Paintings
February 10, 2015 - March 15, 2015

While the many opportunities to decorate grand castles or temples made the early seventeenth century a golden age for artists, the middle of the Edo period (1615–1868) also produced many outstanding suites of large scale sliding door (fusuma) and wall paintings. An artist's status could be greatly boosted by a painting commission from a powerful temple or other major sponsor, for which reason artists devoted their full creative energy to such projects. Over time, the lavish opulence of earlier eras gave way to a chic, understated painting aesthetic. Many of the artists who flourished in the eighteenth century came out of the merchant class, bringing individuality and diversity to wall and door painting ensembles made to decorate interior spaces.
