Celebratory Furnishings: Screens of Famous Festivals
June 13, 2017 - July 23, 2017

Many traditional Japanese festivals (matsuri) began as religious rituals, but over time they turned into spectator events with lively parades and performances of various types. When painters depicted festivals on folding screens, they typically emphasized these appealing, popular aspects, imbuing them with the vibrant buzzing energy of crowds. Large scale folding screens with paintings of festivals are dynamic, celebratory compositions in their own right, for which reason they have traditionally been displayed on festive occasions.
This May, the Kyoto National Museum celebrated its 120th anniversary. We are pleased to celebrate this occasion with a public presentation of these festive furnishings.
