Qi Baishi Masterworks from the Suma Collection Ⅱ
July 2, 2019 - August 12, 2019

In the near decade he spent as a diplomat in China from 1927 to early 1937, Suma Yakichirō (1892–1970) formed one of the preeminent collections of modern Chinese painting. It boasts numerous masterworks by the Chinese painter Qi Baishi (1864–1957), the subject of a Feature Exhibition held at the museum through March of this year. On display at that time were his landscapes (Ch. shanshui) and paintings with human subjects from the Suma Collection. Now, in presenting further Suma Collection masterworks by Qi Baishi in the “Flowers and Trees” and “Birds and Animals” genres, one can experience the full breadth of this important and wildly popular artist.
