The fall of the Ming-dynasty capital of Beijing to the Manchu of northeast China in 1644 marked the beginning of the Qing dynasty, which lasted until the Xinhai Revolution of 1911. Successive generations of Qing emperors oversaw an era of economic prosperity that supported an expansive empire rich in cultural and artistic diversity. Various painters were active at the Qing court: those of the "Orthodox school" revived traditional landscape styles, while others integrated Western techniques of naturalism. In contrast, painters in South China introduced expressive, individualistic styles that paved the way toward a modern approach to painting. This exhibition introduces the diverse world of Qing painting.
