Famous Landscapes of China
February 15, 2022 - March 21, 2022

Landscape occupies a central place in the history of Chinese painting. Chinese landscape paintings convey the forms and colors of the natural world as they change with the seasons, conjure the otherworldly realms of gods and sages, and visualize the idealized lands born from the inner world of the artist.
The landscapes in this exhibition all depict real Chinese places of legendary scenic beauty made famous through literature or as the settings of historical events. These include West Lake in Hangzhou, a distant site long romanticized by Japanese poets and artists; Dongting Lake in Henan and its nearby Yueyan Pavilion that was immortalized in poetry; and Tiger Hill in Suzhou, with its storied Yunyan Pagoda. Take a brief journey into the spellbinding landscapes of China.
