- Chinese Landscapes of Legend

Landscapes with quasi-historical or legendary episodes are a standard theme in Chinese painting. Such scenes tend to depict figures and buildings within the vast beauty of nature. One famous example is the “Gathering at the Orchid Pavilion,” showing ancient calligrapher Wang Xizhi (303–361) and other literati seated along a stream engaging in a poetry-writing and drinking contest. Another theme is “Evening Boat to the Red Cliffs,” which depicts the poet Su Shi (1037–1101) returning by boat to the moonlit site of an epic historical battle described in the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This exhibition features evocative Ming and Qing dynasty paintings that bespeak the poetic imagination stirred by Chinese landscapes.
