The sophisticated technology and exquisite forms and finishes of Chinese ceramics have been extremely influential around the world, garnering much praise and admiration. Chinese ceramics that were imported into Japan soon after they were made—such as Tang sancai (three-colored ware) and Yaozhou celadons—exerted significant influence on the shapes, glazes, and production methods chosen by Japan's early domestic kilns. Objects imported from China were known in Japan as karamono; among them, ceramics were especially prized and frequently copied. This exhibition features the kind of Chinese ceramics that became deeply integrated into Japanese life.
